Visby

One way to learn to find your ways around the narrow alleys in Visby is by remembering that the city is built on three different levels. From "Almedalen" and "Strandgatan" there is a steep ascent towards the "Stora Torget". The next level is up on the "Kyrkberget" and "Norderklint". On many places in the city there are small stairs that makes it easier for pedestrians to move between the different levels.

Take the "Kyrktrappen" up to the "Klinten". This is where the poor people of Visby used to live in small houses only painted with tar. Many of the houses have now been redone but there are still some of these small houses to see.

"Strandpromenaden" would be the obvious place for a walk in Visby. Many people stroll or exercise here all year round. The walk stretches between the harbor of Visby and "Snäck".

The botanical garden is the place for quiet walks and pondering. The garden is just on the inside of the northern parts of the ring wall. Here you can find many eastern and southern species that the seamen brought back, for example mulberries, walnut trees, grapevines, acacia, magnolias and almond trees. The garden was founded by "De Badande Wännerna" (The Bathing Friends) in 1856.
